2008 NJCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Is Nominated for a SportsTravel Award
SportsTravel magazine has announced that the 2008 NJCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships hosted by South Plains College and held in Levelland has been nominated for a 2008 SportsTravel Award. Events are nominated and then voted upon by readers of SportsTravel, the sports world's event magazine.
Criteria for nomination and voting include superior organization of and attendance at the event, a superior experience for the competitors and/or spectators at the event, and how the site or venue served to enhance the event.
Final balloting is open through September 15, 2008. Winners will be announced at the TEAMS 2008 Conference & Expo, October 21-25, 2008, in Pittsburgh."Since the location of the event is a major part of the criteria for being nominated, the people of should take great pride in knowing that an event held in their city is being recognized for its excellence," said Timothy Schneider, publisher of SportsTravel magazine, which organizes the TEAMS Conference & Expo.
"SportsTravel readers are the leaders of the sports-event industry and they really know what it takes to execute a high-quality athletic event," said Schneider. "The SportsTravel Awards program is an opportunity for them to honor their peers and the cities that host sporting events for a job well done."
Official ballots are available in the August and September issues of SportsTravel magazine. Readers may also find more information and vote online at http://www.SportsTravelMagazine.com. The ballot includes nominees in amateur, collegiate and professional categories. Blood Drive Announced
The City of Levelland is hositng a Blood Drive on Wednesday, August 13th from 4:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. in the City of Levelland Council Chambers to benefit Elinda Timmons, a niece of our very own Maria Rodriquez.
If you or anyone you know would like to donate we are taking appointments now. We are hoping for at least 30 pints as of now I have 8 people signed up.

For those of you who don’t know Elinda was in Houston waiting for a double lung transplant. She received her lungs on Thursday, July 31st. She was released from the hospital yesterday and is having to stay in Houston for about another 6 weeks. She is doing great and wants to express her appreciation to everyone for all your prayers and support throughout her ordeal.

Levelland Lobo Golfer Going to State
Levelland Lobo golfer Tucker Hutto will be making his second straight apearance at the Class 3a State Golf Tournament this Thrusday and Friday at the Roy Kiser Golf Course in Austin. Hutto, the two-time Regional Champion, looks to bring home the gold in the two-day, 36 hole tourney. Good Luck Tuck! Make it a great round!
Lobo Baseball Advances to Next Round
The Lobo baseball team took the hard way around to capture the Bi-District baseball series. After losing game 1 to Midland Greenwood the Lobos battled back in the final two games to take the series. The Lobos will face Clint in Van Horn Thursday night at 7:30 and then play game two and if needed game three at Odessa Permian High School in Odessa beginning at noon on Friday. Good luck boys.

Loboette Softball Move to Regional Quarterfinals
The Lobettes defeated Clint 7-0 in the first game last Friday, then ended the series Saturday with a 2-0 victory. The win moves the team to 23-8-1 for the year, and advances the them to the regional quarterfinals this Saturday as they face Midland Greenwood in Andrews at 6 p.m.. Good luck girls! Levelland Celebrating the SPC Texan's 2008 NJCAA Basketball Championship
South Plains College will celebrate it's recent National Championship in men's basketball with a community celebration Tuesday. The victory celebration is scheduled for 6 p.m. in the Texan Dome on the SPC campus in Levelland.
Last week, the Texans men's basketball team won the NJCAA National Championship by defeating Salt Lake (UT) in the finals. It is the school's first-ever NJCAA National title in basketball.
Tuesday's celebration is free and open to the public. Doors to the Texan Dome will open at 5:30 p.m. The team and coaches will be introduced and will receive congratulatory proclamations from SPC President Dr. Kelvin Sharp, the City of Levelland and Lubbock Mayor David Miller. The SPC cheerleaders will do a cheer and perform a dance, and free hot dogs and drinks will be available. Also, the first 1000 people to come through the door will get a free SPC National Championship T-Shirt.
"We, of course, are proud of the team and we know that our fans and community members are proud of them as well," SPC athletic director Joe Tubb said. "We rely on the support of the people of Levelland and this area and we realize they had a part in helping us win this championship. We hope everyone will be in attendance on Tuesday to help us celebrate."

Levelland Receives Economic enhancement Grant Award
SOUTH PLAINS – A press conference will be held in Levelland, Texas on Tuesday, March 4th to announce a grant award aimed at assisting in rural business development in Hockley County.
The Hockley County Enterprise Facilitation Project, a division of WesTex Allied Communities Enterprise Facilitation, received a fifty-thousand dollar grant award to provide business recruitment outreach and assistance to potential entrepreneurs in Hockley County. The project will be administered by the Levelland Development Foundation and services will be provided by WesTex Allied Communities Enterprise Facilitation.
Focused on Hockley County business development through the provision of technical assistance to existing and/or prospective rural entrepreneurs, business owners and managers, the primary type of technical assistance that will be offered is management coaching and has been designed to support community residents, create jobs, facilitate the creation of new businesses and educate and recruit individuals with the passion and skill to become a successful entrepreneur.
Residents of the Cities of Anton, Levelland, Opdyke West, Ropesville, Smyer, Sundown and Whiteface will have local access to business counseling and planning services.
The project is supported by State Representatives Carl Isett, Delwin Jones and Warren Chisum, State Senator Robert Duncan and U.S. Congressman Randy Neugebauer. Major contributors to the project are the City of Anton, Levelland Economic Development Corp., Sundown Economic Development Corp, Wes-Tex RC&D and WorkSource of the South Plains.

Congratulations to the Loboette Girls. The Loboette Varsity Girls will be playing at the Rip Griffin Center at LCU Friday, February 8, 2008 at 6:15 against Lubbock Copper for the District Title.

Alamo Road Closing
Beginning January 4, 2008 N. Alamo Road will be closed for construction. West Texas Paving will begin work to widen the street for traffic to the new Junior High. Work is expected to last 2 to 3 months depending on weather.
Access to the New Middle school will be available on the North end of Alamo off Ellis Street. Make it a great day.
